The term GreenBuilding emerged in the 70s, and from the early 90s the concept became more widespread in the world, when the creation of BREEAM. In Brazil, non-governmental organization Green Building Council Brazil, was created in March 2007 and member of World Green Building Council, is working on the LEED system adapted to Brazilian standards.

A green building, based on environmental sustainability, economic and social development, has become a growing concern in the country and the world - three museums are part of the projects to be opened in Rio de Janeiro in 2012. The Museum of Tomorrow, the Art Museum of Rio (MAR) and the new Museum of Image and Sound (MIS) can be the first institutions of this kind in the country to receive the LEED certification. These three projects, MAR, MIS and Museum of Tomorrow have a common goal: to become a reference in the construction of sustainable buildings in Brazil and spread the good sustainable practices to other cultural buildings in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The World Cup in 2014 and 2016 Olympics bring a large volume of investment to the country. It's time to walk a good path to economic and social development, without forgetting that the great legacy of each new venture emerged in this period should be sustainability.
