Abstract

The relationship of the museum buildings with the environment has as the principal axes the study and creation of micro-climate favorable or unfavorable to the development of museum activities in its internal space, as well as the analysis of the interference that the museum building, in its operation, brings to the environment in which it is inserted.

The article deals, on one hand, with the museum needs in terms of environmental control and comfort for its users and its collection. On the other hand, addresses the need to mitigate the effects of the operation of museums, with their waste, energy and water consumption, on the quality of the external environment.
These areas of knowledge, one towards "inside" the building and the other towards "outside" of museums are shaped by the architecture that organizes and differentiates the space of these cultural institutions, with the climate elements and their relationships as the focus of its creative process.

Designing and building taking into account the climate is not new. Throughout the architecture development environment, with its favorable and unfavorable characteristics of the microclimate in which it is intended to create, it has been  always an element that determined shapes and space organizations. At present this approach also includes the commitment with the conservation and preservation of the environment in which the architecture is situated.

The challenge that the 21st century museum architecture shall face is to set out the variables, internal / external, human and object, within the specificity with which the museum architecture works. These issues affect the spatial organization of museums installed in historic buildings. They value areas that are not for the public, neither for exhibition halls, auditoriums, shops or staff, but of infrastructure, even in new constructions. They cause changes in the operating logic of museums and force institutions to rethink the features that the physical structure of museums should offer to their cultural structure, with the environment as a central element.
